Why did you engage a step of éco-design?

We are present on the markets of the construction and industry.
Our
historical presence in the construction confers a comfortable place to us: first in Europe on the pneumatic tools, second in France on the mobile compressors of building site.

For industry, on the other hand, we come only in the 8th place. Until 2005, we still manufactured our compressors in China. Long delivery periods and high costs of transport made important to bring back the production to France to develop our shares of market and to focus on the development of a range.
Consecutively with this relocalization we decided to offer a “green” product: AirOne, an industrial compressor.
To dissociate ourself by proposing a innovating offer enabled us to dope our sales and especially to be made a place on this market already invested by more “large”. The stake was serious: to propose the best compressor and to force the market to follow us, by becoming the environmental leader.

This step was possible thanks to the CCI which accompanied us in the project. First of all it carried out the eco-design prediagnosis which proceeded in 3 stages: animation of meeting, development of the report and returned this one with the project team; then while helping in financial engineering and the search for people receiving benefits:

- Cetiat & CETIM for acoustic and vibratory analysis

- Ensam for the end of lifetime of the product

- Trivalor for the environmental communication

We profited in addition from a financial support of Ademe which subsidized 50% of the costs.

On which criteria did you concentrate your efforts?

We privileged 5 levels of intervention for this step: raw materials, manufacture, use, maintenance, end of lifetime of the product.

Which were the environmental criteria selected
in the cycle of life?

Here some elements which make AirOne compressor a large compressor with the best noise level, best electric consumption and best guaranteed market:

Choice of materials and end of lifetime of the product

• to optimize the end of lifetime for recycling (disassembling, dies usable…)
• to quantify the recyclability according to standards' in force in the car
• recycled raw materials: between 20 and 36%: copper, sheet, aluminium…
More dangerous substances: coating of screws and bolts to coated with zinc white free from chromium VI/Paintings: without classified substance CMR/Foams inside the doors: which can be recycled, not stuck

On manufacture

• Vat of retention under the machine: to avoid all oil leakages
• No fixing above 1,5m: facility for the operators of assembly

On the use

• Energy: To decrease the quantity of energy necessary to the production of compressed air (criterion: ratio consumption/flow delivered for a given pressure). The spiral valve (a Sullair exclusiveness), makes it possible to reduce electric consumption to levels without comparison.

• Choice of the lubricant: Drain and recycling of the fluid at the end of the lifetime. The system effectiveness of cooling makes it possible to reduce the rejection of particles to 1 PPM, which is the best result of the market.

• Noise and vibrations: the sources of noises in a compressor are multiple (ventilation, block of compression, engine)
We carried out the cartography “noise” so as to identify and deal with the problems with the source.

On maintenance/accessibility to the machine:

• Entirely dismountable and enclosure panels on all sides for easy access to all the components Removable top panel: accessibility to the separator and the filter air

• Simplified and centralized elements of maintenance

• Air end mounted on vibration damper type sliding plate

• Separator vessel with swivel-type lid

The rate of recyclability of the compressor AIR ONE is 94%, which, still, put it on the top of its category.
